2.1 How changing your story can change your life 2

이야기를 함으로써 우리는 불가피하게 도덕적 입장을 취하게 된다라는 말이 있습니다.

There is saying that to tell a story is, inescapably, to take a moral stance.

왜 그런 선택을 했는지, 왜 일이 잘못 되었는지, 왜 나는 누군가를 그렇게 대했고, 왜 누군가는 나를 그렇게 대했는지, 분명 나는 그렇게 대하지 않았는데 말입니다.

Why choices were made, why things went wrong, why we treated someone a certain way ~~why someone treated us a certain way~~ even though, obviously, we didn't treat them that way.

이야기를 우리 자신과 타인에게 우리의 삶을 이해시키는 방법이에요.

Stories are the way we make sense of our lives to ourselves and to the others.

하지만 우리가 하는 이야기들이 오해를 부르거나, 불완전하거나 또는 아예 틀린 얘기라면 어떨까요?

But what happens when the stories we tell are misleading or incomplete or just wrong?

그런 이야기는 정확성이 떨어지며 우리는 더 이상 앞을 보고 갈 수 없게 됩니다.

Well, instead of providing clarity, these stories keep us stuck.

우리는 우리가 처해있는 상황이 있으니 이야기가 발생한다고 생각합니다.

We assume that our circumstances shape our stories.

하지만 제가 일하는 동안 계속해서 느낀 것은 그 순서가 완전히 반대라는 거에요.

But what I found time and again in my work is that the exact opposite happens.

우리가 삶을 이야기하는 대로 우리 삶이 결정됩니다. 이것이 이야기의 위험성이에요. 우리를 망칠 수 있기 때문이죠. 근데 이게 이야기의 힘이기도 해요.

The way we narrate our lives shapes what they become. That's the danger of our stories because it can mess us up. But it's also their power.

우리가 하는 이야기를 바꾸면 삶도 바꿀 수 있어요. 어떻게 하는 건지 보여 드릴게요.

If we change our stories, we can change our lives. I want to show you how.
